[HeavyMetalHeaven] Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, Rush, Blaze Bayley, Praying Mantis, Guns N Roses, Slash, Megadeth and tons more hard rock and heavy metal news

According to USA Today, Ozzy Osbourne's new song "Let Me Hear You Scream", from
his upcoming album, "Scream", will have its world premiere on an episode of
"CSI:NY", to air on CBS on April 14 at 10 p.m., ET/PT. In this episode, a death
row inmate's (guest Harold Perrineau) final request brings Dr. Hawkes (series
regular Hill Harper) to a Pennsylvania prison and to confront a tragic incident
that he has kept secret for many years, just as a prison riot erupts and traps
Hawkes inside.

Ozzy's upcoming album, the 10th solo studio effort of his career, was originally
called "Soul Sucka", but had its title changed after fans complained. The Prince
of Darkness told RollingStone.com, "When we put that on the Internet none of my
fan base liked the title. They were like, 'I can't imagine me walking around the
fucking house with the words 'Soul Sucka' on my T-shirt.' So I was like, 'Fuck
it. I've got to come up with something else!'"

Regarding the musical direction of the new CD, Ozzy told The Pulse of Radio.
"It's very heavy. It's a cross between â€" it's kind of like a SABBATH/Ozzy
album, you know. It's kind of, it wasn't meant to, I didn't plan on doing it but
that's the way it unfolded. A lot of it's very, very heavy. I just hope people
like it. I love it."

The new set is tentatively due out in July.

Ozzy's last solo project, "Black Rain", came out in 2007.

Ozzy also confirmed that Ozzfest will return this summer after taking a one-year
break but did not reveal whether it would be a one-shot affair like the 2008
edition or go back to its roots as a traveling event. He also plans to head out
on his own headlining arena tour next fall.

The new album and tour will introduce guitarist Gus G. Ozzy parted ways last
year with axeman Zakk Wylde, who has played on every Ozzy album and almost every
tour since 1988.

Ozzy Osbourne's long-awaited memoir, "I Am Ozzy", debuted at No. 2 on the New
York Times' hardcover non-fiction best-seller list. The book was published on
January 25 in the U.S., nearly two years after it was first expected to arrive.
"I Am Ozzy" chronicles the legendary metal icon's life from his working-class
beginnings in Birmingham, England to his initial fame with BLACK SABBATH to his
massive solo career and forays into television.

SCORPIONS Guitarist: 'At The Moment, Nobody Knows What We Will Do At The End
Of Our Career' - Mar. 29, 2010

Radio Metal recently conducted an interview with guitarist Matthias Jabs of
German hard rock veterans SCORPIONS. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow
below.

Radio Metal: I heard an "Humanity - Hour 2" album had been planned. Why did you
dismiss the project? Did you realize that the compositions you wrote for the new
album were too different from "Hour 1"? Did this take away the meaning for a
sequel?

Matthias Jabs: There was never an "Hour 2" planned. This "hour one" is part of
the concept, it does not mean "episode 1." Desmond's [Child, producer] idea was
to say that the human species in its intelligent form went through the first
part of its history, like the first 20 or 30,000 years. Right now there's a big
change in history, and the human race is turning into something else, and we
don't know what. You could call that "hour two," but there was never supposed to
be a follow-up album.

Radio Metal: Tarja Turunen [ex-NIGHTWISH singer] appears on the song "The Good
Die Young". However, her appearance is very discreet; was she not frustrated by
this?

Matthias Jabs: It's nice that she's singing on the song. We met her in Brazil a
few years ago, when she was doing one of her last concerts with NIGHTWISH. There
were our support band at the Live And Louder festival in Sao Paulo, where we met
briefly. We're not too keen on doing duets, even if the record companies always
want bands to do duets, for marketing reasons more than musical reasons. This
song wasn't written as a duet. If you do a duet, all of a sudden you depend on
another artist and their management. So this song works with and without Tarja.
We played it last night at the Taratata show. We cannot have a song where we
depend on her, because she lives in Finland and Argentina. And why should we go
on tour and have Tarja with us all the time? It's very nice that she sings on
the track, and she adds a nice atmosphere to it. It's an improvement, it sounds
better with her than without her, but we cannot depend on her. Imagine the song
is a big hit:
everywhere you go, you'll have to bring this other person along. Just no!

Radio Metal: Correct me if I'm wrong, but the album had already been composed
when you decided to end your career. What were you thinking after you realized
that this would be your last album?

Matthias Jabs: I still don't know. I've been in the band almost 32 years. It's
been our life every day â€" and will be for the next two years. Try as I might,
it's unimaginable at the moment, and that's why I give up. I'll just concentrate
on the tour. Nobody really understands what life will be like when we don't do
SCORPIONS anymore. It's impossible to imagine.

Radio Metal: Let's imagine that you had decided to quit before making the album.
Would you have written it differently? I guess that there would have been a lot
more pressure on you...

Matthias Jabs: I guess so, yes. If we had decided beforehand that this would be
our last album, there would probably be songs where we would have mentioned it.
I'm sure we would have written it differently. My colleagues will turn 62 this
year â€" I'm a bit younger â€" and at the end of the tour they will be 65. After
that, can you see them going back to the studio to record a new album, and then
go on another long tour? The idea was to conclude our very long career with
dignity and class. We want people to remember us as a great band, with fit and
healthy musicians. We don't want the public to think: "They used to be great,
but now they really look old."

Radio Metal: A band like KISS, at some point, had announced a farewell tour. But
today they're still here and actually released a new album last year. Are you
confident when you say that after this album and long tour, SCORPIONS will be
gone for good? Will you resist the temptation to reform the band?

Matthias Jabs: I'm sure we will resist. Maybe we'll stretch the tour, make it as
long as possible, but once it is over, it is over. The "KISS effect" started ten
years ago. Now you have farewell tour one, farewell tour number two, number
three… We don't want to make a joke of ourselves. We are serious.

Radio Metal: I mentioned KISS, and actually their album "Sonic Boom" was very
well received by the critics and fans alike. Obviously it was a good thing for
them and the fans that they didn't quit after all and took the "risk" to do
another album. Have you thought to yourselves: "Maybe we're missing out on many
more great records…?"

Matthias Jabs: At the moment, nobody knows what we will do at the end of our
career. It is too early to really think about it. I think within the next two or
three years, when we're on tour, things will come to us and become obvious.
Maybe it will be a musical project with other people, maybe it will be something
else. Everything is imaginable, but we have no concrete plans. All we have to
take care of at the moment is the release of the new album and the tour. We're
going to play all around the world. We're going to Frankfurt tomorrow to do some
more promotion, next week we'll be going to Austria for a big TV show, then we
go straight to New York and Los Angeles, and right after that we'll be playing
shows in Belgium. We were playing in Moscow yesterday, and flew to Paris at 4
a.m.! This is going to take all our energy, and it's way too early to think
about the rest. I mean, do you know what you'll be doing in three years?!

Radio Metal: We still have two or three years left with SCORPIONS. Are you
dreading the moment it will all be over?

Matthias Jabs: No. For us, two and half years is not that long, the last tour
for "Humanity - Hour 1" was just as long. That's normal if you want to play all
around the world. We could play two months in South America, six months in the
U.S. and three months in Asia if we wanted to. That's something normal for us,
we've been doing this for more than 20 years now. And as I said before, I don't
know how we'll feel at the very end of this tour. Touring makes you fit. The
traveling part can be tiring, but playing on stage almost every night is almost
like a sport. We will probably be fitter then that we are now!

Radio Metal: If you could keep one positive and one negative memory of your
whole career with SCORPIONS, what would they be?

Matthias Jabs: It's probably not what you want to hear, but to me, the best
thing is the fact that we're here today. We've had a long career, and now we can
go on tour with our last album. That's the best moment, so to speak. The worst
will probably be the day after the last concert.

Chad Bowar of About.com recently conducted an interview with SCORPIONS frontman
Klaus Meine. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

About.com: Did you know going into the recording of "Sting Of The Tail" that it
would be your last studio album?

Klaus Meine: No, we didn't know when we started. We realized in the last couple
of weeks when the album was coming together and the record was shaping up. We
realized that this would be a smash album, the best tradition of what the
SCORPIONS are all about. Then this idea came up, and I think it was our manager
who talked about it the first time. We thought he was joking, but then we said
if we put this album out, go on another world tour, it's not a bad idea. We're
coming out with an album that's very powerful, put it on the road with a long
tour, then finish this amazing run of 40 years of rock and roll on a high note.

About.com: Is the title a nod to your "Love At The First Sting" album from the
'80s?

Klaus Meine: I had the idea to use this title years ago, because it makes a
powerful connection with the SCORPIONS. We were playing around with making this
connection with the '80s. When we listened to this album, we had a feeling there
was a lot of attitude with a lot of songs that we could play live for our fans.
So it was the perfect title. The stinger is still sharp after all these years.
It's like closing the circle.

About.com: What are some of the biggest changes you've seen in your 40 years in
the music industry?

Klaus Meine: We started making vinyl records, and are now in the digital era.
The biggest change is that young kids today download music from the internet.
When we started out, for me as a fan, when a new album came out I couldn't wait
to buy it, take it home and listen to the whole record. I think that's changed a
lot. Die hard fans might still do this, but for the majority of people that love
music, they download their favorite songs. One thing hasn't changed, and that's
the desire of young kids to go to a concert and see a great live band. This
explains why we see a whole new generation of SCORPIONS fans, because they know
we are still a band that delivers the goods live.

About.com: How have the SCORPIONS managed to stay together for 40 years?

Klaus Meine: Well, Chad, I think the bottom line is that friendship was the
foundation of this band. When we started in the early '70s making our first
records, there were some member changes, but we always were looking for people
we had a good feeling about. If we go out on the road and play for months and
months and spend time on the tour bus, you want to hang with good people. Of
course you want to have great musicians, but it's also equally important to have
great guys, great people. This philosophy of friendship really paid off, because
in a 40-year career you're not always on a constant high. You have to go down as
well, and that's when it shows if you have the right people that stick with you,
and you make it back to the top again, and that's what we did.

James Bradshaw of The Globe and Mail recently conducted an interview with RUSH guitarist Alex Lifeson. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Globe and Mail: You've said you're not concerned whether RUSH gets into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Is that still true?

Lifeson: Honestly, I really, really don't care about it. There's so many politics involved in that. I think there are so many other bands that are deserving to be in there, even before us, bands that we looked up to and were influenced by. They've got a lot of bands in there that I don't think should really be in there. It's fine, they can do whatever they want – it's their hall of fame and whatever. Personally, in the long run, I'd prefer that we don't get the offer, because I'm not so sure I'd want to go. Our fans are very insulted that we've been passed over so many times, but honestly, it doesn't matter to us.

The Globe and Mail: Has your songwriting role changed over the years?

Lifeson: I think, essentially, it's the same it always has been. We bring different things to it — obviously Neil [Peart] brings lyrics and Geddy [Lee] and I write all the music. Geddy and I have very different approaches to writing. … I have a low attention span, whereas he's much more methodical. … So when we're writing, we really have a nice balance in our process. I tend to throw things out – I'm always kind of noodling in the corner, and he'll hear something, and say, "Let's put that down right away!" because he understands me.

It's a funny thing with writing: You fall in love with these things and you're so excited about them, you can't wait to start working on them the next day, and then you reach a point where you just hate them and you're not sure if they're any good. And you get away from them for a few days and then you fall in love with them again. It's this crazy yo-yo relationship you have with new material.

The Globe and Mail: How far off is the next album?

Lifeson: We were off for a year and a half, and now it's just pouring. Everything is totally crazy and there's not a minute left in the day. We've got these half-dozen songs, and we'll probably go in the studio and work on a couple of them and see how it goes, perhaps release something — and I say perhaps — and then we plan on being on the road in the middle of June. Ideally, we'd like to showcase a couple of these songs on the tour, come off tour in mid-October, go back in the studio and continue writing, then record through late this year and early next year, and then release the album in the spring of 2011 on a slightly more substantial tour. This [year's] tour will probably be about 45 dates. Most likely summer, 2011, would be more like 70.

The Globe and Mail: With the advent of iPods and downloading, is live performance more central for you?

Lifeson: I would say that it's a little more relevant. It used to be that you made an album and then you went on the road to promote that album, hoping for good record sales. Well, good record sales basically don't exist any more, and the emphasis has been more on the live show. We're fortunate that we've got a good track record of being a live act. We feel very, very comfortable in that arena, and we're always looking to expand and try new things in the stage show.

So it's challenging and exciting for us, and I think we deliver. We tend to rehearse for a few weeks on our own, then we do four weeks of full-band rehearsal, and then we do two weeks of full-production rehearsal where we treat it as a show. That's primarily for the crew, but we play the set every day, sometimes twice a day, so we're so ready by the time we hit that first gig.

Anna Di Laurenzio, the tour manager for former IRON MAIDEN/WOLFSBANE frontman Blaze Bayley has issued the following update:

"The [BLAZE BAYLEY] band have now returned from the first leg of the European tour (which has been absolutely fantastic) but the last gig of the tour (in Belgium yesterday) had to be cancelled at very short notice and we would like to apologise to fans who travelled to the gig and arrived to find it cancelled. We had no choice as [drummer] Larry [Paterson] was taken to hospital yesterday afternoon with severe blood inflamation and was kept in overnight. He is now back in the U.K. recovering.

"Larry struggled through the second Swiss gig and the two German shows but despite his fierce/stubborn determination to soldier on, there was no way he could do the last gig in Belgium. Blaze and the rest of the band remained at the venue to personally let fans know why the gig had been cancelled.

"I will be rescheduling this gig for later in the year.

"We wish him a speedy drumming recovery."

Blaze's new album, "Promise and Terror", was released on February 1.

The singer's double live album and live DVD, "The Night That Will Not Die" — recorded on December 13, 2008 at Z7 in Pratteln, Switzerland — were released on Blaze Bayley Recordings; the concert was filmed by director Kris McManus and all audio mixed and mastered by producer Jase Edwards.

On September 25, 2009, the book "At The End Of The Day" was released. This follows the story of "Blaze" Bayley Cooke from WOLFSBANE to IRON MAIDEN to BLAZE and, ultimately, to the current self-titled BLAZE BAYLEY band. However, this book is not solely about Blaze; rather it tells the story of the entire BLAZE BAYLEY band that is about to begin work on the follow-up to their debut album, "The Man Who Would Not Die". The book traces the history of all the band members, back to their roots in New Zealand, Colombia and…Bristol.

Radio Metal recently conducted an interview with former IRON MAIDEN/WOLFSBANE
singer Blaze Bayley. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Radio Metal: What is your relationship like with IRON MAIDEN fans at the moment?
Are there any that remained faithful to you because they discovered a voice that
they preferred through MAIDEN on "X-Factor"?

Blaze: I meet a lot of fans from the IRON MAIDEN days who say that they have
never checked out my solo stuff. Today it seems that people are more open to
listen to it. Nowadays, hardcore IRON MAIDEN fans tend to listen to my albums
and think of it as another great band to listen to. Obviously, the band is
influenced by IRON MAIDEN but we do not want to copy them. Of course, my vocals
are similar to IRON MAIDEN because of my time spent in the band. Now we seem to
get more IRON MAIDEN fans but it is a real mix of people. The young ones who
have discovered us from the catalogues and the older fans, who maybe preferred
Bruce, are also coming to the shows. It is an unusual thing yet so far everybody
from my era in IRON MAIDEN has enjoyed what we do in Blaze Bayley band.

Radio Metal: Three weeks ago, you were interviewed by Bruce Dickinson for the
"Bruce Dickinson Rock Show". Can you tell us about this experience?

Blaze: It is always hilarious when Bruce and I get together. I have known Bruce
longer than anyone because he came to see me when I was in WOLFSBANE. We met in
New York and there was a lot of talk in Kerrang! saying that we were twins
(laughs). So we decided to get our picture taken together and then he bought me
a beer. We have never had any animosity towards each other and it is always fun
to see Bruce. He really supported my last album on his radio show. I am only in
contact with the other guys in IRON MAIDEN. It is fun because there are so many
similarities between our lives: we have both been the singers of IRON MAIDEN and
we have both left IRON MAIDEN. (laughs)

Radio Metal: Are you sick of people asking you about your relationship with
MAIDEN?

Blaze: You would have to put that in perspective because I was always a big IRON
MAIDEN fan. I used to listen to some of their classic songs when I was cleaning
the floors in the hotel where I worked. As a fan, I knew that if you were in
IRON MAIDEN, and you were an ex-member, then everyone would know you. True, IRON
MAIDEN fans are excessively interested in the history of the band. I realised
this before I even joined the band and even though I never wanted to leave,
things did not work out. I knew that after being in IRON MAIDEN, people would
always think of me as an ex-member. I loved my time in the band so much that I
feel as though it is a badge of honour.

Radio Metal: Your real name is Bailey Cook, however, recently you changed your
passport to Blaze Bayley. Could you tell us about this anecdote?

Blaze: In English, the name Bailey is more commonly a second name so people
would often get it confused. When I was in WOLFSBANE and we gave ourselves
stupid glam names, I just kept Blaze because no one would question me anymore.

Radio Metal: In order to embellish your musical project, you took business
classes. At the start, I thought that management, business and communication did
not interest you at all and that you are an artist above all. Do you think that,
nowadays, musicians are unable to make it on their own?

Blaze: I don't think that it is good enough to be just a musician. The music
business has grown in the culture of, you do the music and I will handle the
money. This means that management will do anything keep the band happy and
questioning what is happening with all the money. They give the band drink,
drugs and girls to keep them distracted. When you see that your band has a
number one in the charts, you start to ask yourself where the money is and that
is when they try to distract you some more. For this reasons, it is bands who
have some degree of business knowledge, like Mick Jagger, for example, who are
better at maintaining their success. I have the confidence as a singer and as a
songwriter; therefore, I understood that in order to be free and independent, I
needed to learn the business.

Legendary guitarist Slash will be honored at the third annual Sunset Strip Music
Festival (SSMF). SSMF will celebrate Slash, who is synonymous with The Sunset
Strip, for his contributions to the history of The Strip as well as the music
industry. The tribute event kicks off the three-day music fest and honors icons
who have made an impact on the legacy of The Sunset Strip. The August 26 event
will take place at the House of Blues Sunset Strip.

Adding to the celebration, the City of West Hollywood will also declare August
26, 2010 "Slash Day."

"I am sincerely overwhelmed to be the recipient of the Sunset Strip Music
Festival honors! The Strip and West Hollywood have been my stomping grounds
since I was a little kid," noted Slash. "I grew up in and around the music scene
here. It is where I got my start in the music business and where I still feel
most at home. Thank you so much."

Known for his skillful, soulful hard-rock guitar solos, Slash's career has
continued to grow from his early days performing at the Whisky A Go-Go with GUNS
N' ROSES to his collaborations with Michael Jackson ("Black And White", "Give In
To Me"), Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder and directors Quentin Tarantino and Darren
Aronofsky (core contributions to the "Jackie Brown" soundtrack and the signature
sound of the score to "The Wrestler").

Slash traces his love of music and exploring spirit to his childhood in England,
where his father introduced him to the sounds of THE BEATLES, THE ROLLING
STONES, YARDBIRDS and other classic, groundbreaking acts. He got an insider's
view through his teen years after the family moved to Los Angeles, his father a
graphic artist who worked with David Geffen for such artists as Neil Young and
Joni Mitchell and his mother a costume designer for many top pop artists. Almost
on a whim, he and friend Steve Adler started playing music together; Slash on
guitar and Adler on drums. In the early '80s, influenced by such bands as
Lemmy's MOTÖRHEAD, he and Adler formed a band, recruiting bassist Duff McKagan.
Within a year, with the addition of singer Axl Rose and guitarist Izzy Stradlin,
the venture had morphed into GUNS N' ROSES â€" and by the end of the decade had
changed the course of rock history.

Slash has also lent his talents to bands SLASH'S SNAKEPIT and the Grammy
Award-winning VELVET REVOLVER as well as a self-titled solo album, which
features guest spots from artists including Ozzy Osbourne, Fergie, Lemmy,
WOLFMOTHER's Andrew Stockdale and Adam Levine (MAROON 5) among others, set for
release on April 6.

"You cannot mention The Sunset Strip without thinking of Slash. His influence
changed the course of rock and roll and can be seen daily on The Strip," stated
Todd Steadman, executive director of the Sunset Strip Music Festival. "He
continues to support The Sunset Strip and has been a part of the festival from
its inaugural year, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to celebrate him
for his contributions to this legendary music boulevard."

"The City of West Hollywood is so proud to be home to the world-famous Sunset
Strip, and we look forward to again hosting the Sunset Strip Music Festival,"
noted West Hollywood Mayor Abbe Land. "Building on the first two successful
events, we're certain that this year's festival will be an amazing celebration
of The Strip, its history and great music. That celebration will be even more
exciting with the recognition of Slash as one of the festival honorees. He has
energized audiences worldwide, but holds a special place in the ongoing legacy
of The Sunset Strip."

Previous SSMF honorees include Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and Elmer Valentine,
who helped shape the live music experience on The Strip with the creation of The
Roxy Theatre, The Rainbow and the Whisky A Go-Go, and rock icon Ozzy Osbourne,
whose first U.S. performance was at the Whisky with BLACK SABBATH in 1970.

Similar to the 2009 SSMF, this year's event will feature live performances in
all six music venues (Cat Club, House of Blues, Key Club, The Roxy Theatre,
Viper Room and Whisky A Go-Go) on Friday, August 27 and Saturday, August 28. The
three-day event will conclude with a street festival on Saturday, August 28,
which includes a street closure from San Vicente Boulevard to Doheny Drive
allowing for outdoor stages as well as live performances throughout the day and
night in the music venues.

More details about the Sunset Strip Music Festival 2010, including artist lineup
and ticket information, will be announced.

Todd Kerns (SIN CITY SINNERS, STATIC IN STEREO, AGE OF ELECTIC) has replaced Dave Henning (BIG WRECK) on bass in former GUNS N' ROSES and current VELVET REVOLVER guitarist Slash's touring band. The rest of the group consists of rhythm guitarist Bobby Schneck (WEEZER, GREEN DAY), drummer Brent Fitz (ALICE COOPER, VINCE NEIL) and vocalist Myles Kennedy from ALTER BRIDGE.

MEGADETH's official web site has been updated with the following message:

"MEGADETH would like to send out their sincere condolences to the family and friends of a fallen Droogie [MEGADETH fan], Jeffrey Hendricks. Jeffrey passed away on Friday, March 26 after a battle with cancer.

"Jeffrey was to attend the MEGADETH concert and meet-and-greet in Memphis, Tennessee on March 23 but went into critical condition the night before and was not able to attend. After hearing the news that Jeffrey wouldn't be able to attend the show, Dave Mustaine and the band gave Jeffrey a very special phone call.

"Jeffrey had met the band at a MEGADETH concert in Knoxville in November 2009.

"The family has expressed their gratitude to Dave and the band for meeting and spending time with Jeffrey last November and for calling him Tuesday. They said that getting to meet and talk with the band really brightened the last six months of Jeffrey's life, and they'll always be extremely grateful for it."

BELLADONNA, the band led by former ANTHRAX frontman Joey Belladonna, will embark
on a South American tour at the end of May.

So far the following dates have been announced:

May 29 - Rock & Bar - Barquisimeto, Venezuela
Jun. 01 - Pub El Imperio - Copiapo, Chile

Video footage of Joey Belladonna singing a karaoke version of the JOURNEY
classic "Don't Stop Believin'" on October 10, 2009 at the Spooky Empire VIP
party in Orlando, Florida can be viewed below.
Belladonna is currently writing material for a new solo album. Several demos are
complete and will be posted on the vocalist's MySpace page soon.

Belladonna was the lead singer of ANTHRAX from 1984 to 1992, and was considered
part of the band's classic lineup (alongside Dan Spitz, Scott Ian, Frank Bello
and Charlie Benante), which reunited and toured during 2005 and 2006. His voice
was featured on over 10 albums, which reportedly sold eight million copies
worldwide.

After splitting with ANTHRAX, Joey continued to make music with a solo project
called BELLADONNA, which released its first self-titled debut in the mid-'90s. A
follow-up effort, "Spells of Fear", came out in 1998 and it was heavily
criticized for bad production and sloppy musicianship. The third album, or
rather the demo recordings for what was supposed to be the third BELLADONNA
album that was never recorded in a real studio, was self-released by Belladonna
in 2003. It was a return to better songwriting and musicianship and it was well
received by the fans.

Aniruddh "Andrew" Bansal of Metal Assault conducted an interview with guitarist Oscar Dronjak of Swedish melodic metallers HAMMERFALL on March 27, 2010 at the House Of Blues in Hollywood, California. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Metal Assault: The guitars on the latest album were tuned down one whole step. What was the reason and how did it impact Joacim's [Cans] vocals?

Oscar: We did start out with the standard tuning and dropped half step and continued like that on to the new album where we dropped another half step. It has helped him and I think he feels more secure with the vocals. Even if it's just half a step, it makes a difference. Plus the guitars get heavier and I have no problem with that (laughs). So it all works out.

Metal Assault: What difference has the new lineup [with Pontus Norgren on guitar and Fredrik Larsson on bass] made to the new album?

Oscar: If you just start with the fact that we have two new members in the band, before songs were written and before any rehearsals were done or anything like that, just the fact that we have two new guys it's like an adrenaline injection. To be honest, we had done things the same way for far too long without realizing it. People were kind of tired of going through the motions of recording, touring and writing songs. So this was a good shake-up for us. First we got Fredrik who is my best friend in the whole world. It's fantastic to play with him again. I played with him before when he was in our band for the first time. Having him back is unbelievably cool. He's a much better bass player with Anders [Johansson, drums] because he plays together with him and creates the rhythm, the foundation of what the guitars and the vocals build upon. These details are important and make a difference to me, especially when you are playing live. Pontus is a fantastic
guitar player. I'm not taking anything away from Stefan. He was great too, but Pontus is more versatile than Stefan [Elmgren] was which makes it easier. When we write songs, I know that Pontus can do all kinds of different things. On this new album, there is a lot more space for the solos this time and it was intentional. I try to play some solos whenever I can, I'm not that great at it (laughs) but I can do some melodies. I'm like K.K. Downing of JUDAS PRIEST and he's obviously like Glenn [Tipton]. But, that was the sort of way this album was going to be. It was a good way to introduce him. I think we've been lacking in the solo parts. Not that they were bad, but they weren't long enough before. This has nothing to do with Stefan. We just came to a realization that Pontus is a really versatile guitar player. We could have done that with Stefan too but we just never thought about it. Plus the experience of Pontus as a producer and in sound engineering
on the tour has been invaluable.

Metal Assault: HAMMERFALL has traditionally done really well in Sweden and other European countries. How much do you think you've progressed here in North America?

Oscar: I don't know about sales and I think they basically still suck. We've done three weeks on this tour and the thing I'm most happy with and the most surprised with, is that at most of the shows the first few rows are filled with teenagers. I didn't see this last time. So that gives me a lot of hope for the future. It was like that in Sweden and Europe too. We started played for people mostly of our age, which was about 25 in those days. Then we started seeing lot more younger people and all of a sudden there is this new metal generation. So this gives me a lot of hope and I hope we can come back again. The way I see it is, we do this tour now which is like ground work, we come back soon for the next time and if there are not many people at the shows then I don't think we are going to tour here anymore. This is the last try. We are a band and everybody has their say, but if I had my way I would like to come back and do it again soon so we can know if
this actually worked. Everybody always tells you that in the States you have to keep touring all the time. We never did that. We did 98, 2002, 2005 and now 2010. So four tours in 13 years is not a lot.

Metal Assault: You've had the same label [Nuclear Blast] but three producers through your career. What did each producer bring to you as input?

Oscar: The first producer we had was Fredrik Nordström. He was a friend of mine from before. Both Fredrik and I recorded albums with him before HAMMERFALL. The two HAMMERFALL albums were perfect with him. He is really good at certain things but we felt that we wanted to change the scenery and bring something fresh. Then we decided to do it with Michael Wagener. ACCEPT have been one of our biggest influences and he has done several ACCEPT albums. So it was a great thing and a great experience to be with him. "Renegade" is the best-selling album that we have so obviously he did something right. We had a great eight weeks over there in Nashville. His studio is on the ranch of ACCEPT guitar player Wolf Hoffmann, so for me back then I was star struck! It was like the first time I met Udo [Dirkschneider]. I didn't dare to say anything. I just walked there and looked at him to see if it was even true. Then we found Charlie [Bauerfeind], the producer we've had
on the last four albums. I think with the direction we were going in, when we started writing songs for "Crimson Thunder", he was the right man for the job. We have evolved the relationship with him and the working structure is really good now. We're just starting talks about recording a new album. I mean, it's going to be next year or something but we still have to plan it ahead of time. He understands what we want to get out of the music and that's really important too. I've never had any bad experiences with him. I hear about producers who come in and tell people, "Hey this is what I want," and then go out. Charlie is a workhorse. He gets in the studio before everybody else and leaves later than everyone. He works 12 to 14 hours everyday. We have every other weekend off but he does it every day. There is no way I could do that so hats off to him!

Thomas Stanley Orwat Jr. of RockMusicStar.com recently conducted an interview with RATT guitarist Warren DeMartini. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

RockMusicStar.com: When you starting planning for this CD, did you use material already written or did you start off fresh?

Warren DeMartini: Mostly, it was all written this year, other than a few specific things. Carlos Cavazo brought in something that ended up becoming the pre-chorus to "Best of Me". This was something he had written back when he was writing for QUIET RIOT's "Metal Heath".

RockMusicStar.com: Really, wow.

Warren DeMartini: Yeah, the pre-chorus part that happens right before the guitar solo. And the guitar part that opens the song "Last Call" was something that I wrote for the last RATT album in 1999, which we didn't end up using. So when we were putting together ideas for this CD, I remember this piece of music, plugged it in and it worked real well in the song.

RockMusicStar.com: Carlos Cavazo joined the band almost two years ago. He is an accomplished guitarist. You must love working with him.

Warren DeMartini: It's really great. When we play live all the dual guitar parts that Robin Crosby and I did back in the day, are slamming again. We are continuing that style with Carlos now. On "Infestation" there are some tracks with some pretty exotic double leads that we really had a good time doing. It's really been great. Carlos has fit in so well, he's sort of cut from the same cloth, he grew up on the same music that we did. He just really fit in extremely well. And he came from an established band like ours, so he knew what to expect. He's not a stranger to the road or a stranger to be in a big band. So, it's really worked out well that way too. He helps create a balance.

RockMusicStar.com: How has your working relationship with Stephen Pearcy progressed over the years?

Warren DeMartini: When Stephen came back to the band in 2007; it came after a very tumultuous period. You know, we didn't talk for five years, we communicated through lawyers. I remember one point however, when I realized that making a new CD with him was possible. When we were rehearsing for the "Best of Ratt" tour for the CD something happened. During the time he was out of the band, I wrote an outro for a song called "Lack of Communication" and that bit ended up on "Infestation" as a song called "Big Bite". Anyways, at the end of that song we kicked in with this new part and he said "Wow!! Who came up with that." It was at that point that I realized that we could get back to writing.

RockMusicStar.com: You have this CD under your belt now, how are you going to promote it? What are you tour plans?

Warren DeMartini: RATT is going to launch the release of "Infestation" on April 20th at the Key club. It was called Gazzarri's back then, located at the end of the Sunset Strip and it's the first real club that RATT ever played. This was the club that everyone wanted to play back when a band was looking for a record contract. It's going to be a record release party there and then we are going to play a couple of one off shows. The official "Infestation" tour is going to start in Europe at the Sweden Rock fest on June 10. From there we are going to do some other festivals and our own things and some special guest stuff. That's all still being put together. That will probably go four or five weeks. The soonest that we could start in the states would be mid-July.

The recently resurrected MURDERDOLLS have issued the following update:

"Joey (Jordison) and Wednesday (13) here back for studio report #2. We began tracking guitars and bass yesterday and this fucker sounds monstrous. We've also included some new pics from our late Friday night studio adventures. Once we are done with guitars and bass it's on to the fun stuff, vocals and adding the sweet sauce and spices! It's much like the Col. Sanders secret recipe, we can't tell you what it is... but it's finger licking good."

The official press release announcing the return of Murderdolls reads as follows:

Just when you thought all the fun was gone from rock music, you thought wrong, because the inimitable Murderdolls are back, emerging from a dormant period with their middle fingers to the sky, tongues planted firmly in their cheeks and ready to call out those that haunt today's predictable musical landscape. Their first album in eight years, entitled Women and Children Last, is set for release this summer through Roadrunner Records.

Murderdolls are the Frankenstein brainchild of Joey Jordison and partner-in-grime, Wednesday 13. The band sees Joey step away from his day job and masked role behind the kit in SLIPKNOT to playing a low-slung lead guitar, while Wednesday serves as the frontman in their macabre rock 'n' roll circus. The duo are ready to breathe new life into the project with a brand new line-up, while their 'fuck you' attitude, devilish glamour and trademark black sense of humor remain firmly in tact. Joey and Wednesday are excited to bring back their revamped musical monster, exclaiming, "We don't look at this as a return...this is REVENGE! The music scene today is as boring and stale as it was in 2002, when we first formed the band. This time around, everyone is the enemy!"

Comments Joey, "We've waited eight years to make sure, but this is the perfect time to bring Murderdolls back to the world. We've got nothing to lose and nothing to prove. So raise your fist along with us motherfuckers and sorry if you get a bloody nose along the way. It's about to get ugly! Women And Children Last!!!"

Murderdolls first gate-crashed the scene in 2002, hammering one final nail into nu-metal's coffin and building a formidable fanbase of loyal 'ghoulscouts' with their single, 'Dead in Hollywood' and their twisted take on the Billy Idol anthem, 'White Wedding.'

The band caused a stir across the pond in the UK, headlining the 5500-capacity Brixton Academy, as their debut album, Beyond the Valley of the Murderdolls, earned a silver certification in the country. The band also picked up the "Best Newcomer" award at the inaugural Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards.

Murderdolls are in an undisclosed Los Angeles studio now, laying down tracks for Women And Children Last. Don't say you haven't been warned.

Reactivated New Jersey thrashers WHIPLASH have been forced to cancel their appearance at this year's Keep It True XIII festival, set to take place April 23-24, 2010 at Tauberfrankenhalle in Lauda-Königshofen, Germany. According to the festival organizers, "the lawyer of one bandmember cancelled all future live shows of WHIPLASH because his client is going through a tough divorce. Unfortunately, the flights were already booked and so we are right now trying to get back our already paid money from the band. Also because of that and the fact that it is simply impossible to book an equal band three weeks before the festival we have decided to let some bands play longer sets."

KINGDOM OF SORROW, the metal project created by Jamey Jasta (HATEBREED) and Kirk Windstein (DOWN, CROWBAR), will release its second album, "Behind The Blackest Tears", in the U.S. on June 8 via Relapse Records. The CD was was recorded at Dexter Lab Recordings in Milford, Connecticut with engineer Nick Bellmore and was mixed and mastered by Chris "Zeuss" Harris at Planet Z Recordings in Hadley, Massachusetts.

Commented Jasta: "I'm really excited about the KINGDOM OF SORROW album because I feel like I really went all out this time. I love the first album but I brought way better riffs to the table this time and really brought a different vocal style on a lot of tracks. I think this new album is much more memorable and that the songs are really catchy but still heavy and raw.

"CROWBAR has some European touring to do but we may squeeze some KINGDOM OF SORROW shows in when I am not touring with HATEBREED this year."

KINGDOM OF SORROW released its self-titled debut in early 2008. The band embarked on a 70-city tour in support of the CD and took part in the Ozzfest and Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tours. KINGDOM OF SORROW also released three music videos from the record, one of which can be viewed below.

ARTISTdirect.com editor Rick Florino recently conducted an interview with FAITH NO MORE singer Mike Patton. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

ARTISTdirect.com: Have you always had this fascination with Italy or did it happen after you'd developed an appreciation for the culture?

Mike Patton: It happened after I got married, my friend [Laughs]. I married an Italian lady, and I had to get acquainted. Basically, it started with the language because her family and her parents didn't really speak English. I had to learn the language, so I did that. The longer you spend in a place like that, it really sucks you in. It really envelopes you and makes you feel like one of them. If you say "Ciao," they go, "Oh my God, that's amazing! That sounds great! You're Italian!" It's not like France, where you say, "Bonjour" and they go, "No, no, no, it's Bonjouuurrr!" [Laughs] I had never been taken in like I was in Italy just by saying a few words. That made me feel like I had to put in the effort and I want to be one of them. Have you ever lived abroad?

ARTISTdirect.com: No, I haven't, but I always wanted to go to Italy because I am Italian.

Mike Patton: Well, there you go! You have the best excuse in the world [Laughs]. C'mon! When you do live abroad, you're basically searching for some kind of peace. You don't want to be the fuckin' foreigner. You want to be a part of everyday life there and you don't want anybody to look at you sideways. So you find ways of blending in, and it's a real challenge. I was able to do it, by learning the language well enough and then also really immersing myself in the musical scene there. Oddly enough, I became attracted to the stuff from the '60s and the '70s, and that's where this record comes from.

ARTISTdirect.com: Italian art has always been boundless, from Da Vinci to Dario Argento. That boundlessness is in line with what you've done your whole career. There's never been a set Italian style; anything goes.

Mike Patton: Oh yeah, I think that could be said for most cultures. To be honest, a lot of the tunes that I chose for [the MONDO CANE] record were, in some way, a very strange mirror for what was going on in the States. It wasn't like Italian folk music from novelty or Sicilian choral music. A lot of it was like a very strange refraction of what was going on in America but it came out in a very Italian style. Somehow, I think they put their fingerprint on popular music at that time.

ARTISTdirect.com: Are you going to bring [MONDO CANE] on the road?

Mike Patton: I'm hoping to! It's a difficult and expensive project to bring to life. I'm working on it now. We're doing a tour in Europe in July. It's so much easier to do in Europe for some reason. Maybe later in the fall, I'll do some shows in the States. There are different orchestras every gig. Basically, you show up! We're playing Poland, and they'll be a Polish orchestra. You rehearse with them one day, and then you play concert. Next day, Russia!

ARTISTdirect.com: Given that FAITH NO MORE is back now, what does the band and its catalog mean to you after all of these years?

Mike Patton: Well, it's strange, you know? To be honest, I never thought that I would ever revisit that stuff again. After some reflection and speaking with the guys, I realized, "Well, wait a minute. I'm not embarrassed about it [Laughs]. It's still good music! Is there a way that we can still pull it off and do it justice?" So we rehearsed! When we rehearsed, I realized this is good and I feel great about it. After that, we decided to do some shows. The interest was also kind of staggering. Basically, there's more interest in us now than when we were an active band, which is really strange, kind of haunting and maybe a bit morbid, but it also inspired us. We thought, "Okay, for some reason people are really interested in this. Maybe we should take it as seriously as they are?" [Laughs] You know what I mean?

ARTISTdirect.com: Coachella is a great platform for you to make your big debut back after the San Francisco shows.

Mike Patton: In terms of festivals in the U.S., I can't think of a better one or a more appropriate one. The San Francisco shows are basically warm-ups for us. We're doing them in our hometown and it'll be like a high-five type of evening.

Earlier this month, U.K.'s OneMetal.com conducted an interview with guitarist Corey Beaulieu of Florida metallers TRIVIUM. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

OneMetal.com: OK, I'm going to have to get this out of the way, and its probably the question you're expecting the most… What's the truth behind [the departure of former drummer] Travis [Smith] and [addition of current drummer] Nick [Augusto]?

Corey: (laughing) Yeah, yeah.. Well, it's kinda like a really long story. But, over time, things just kinda weren't working out. We did a headline tour of the U.S. and about halfway through Travis just said he wasn't going to do the next tour, so regardless we had to think about getting someone to fill in, then once we started playing with Nick we just knew it was the right thing. At that time though we didnt know whether it was going to be Nick specifically or somebody else. We just knew it had to be somebody new, and for the benefit of moving the band forward, we had to do it. It was either moving forward, not going backwards or just falling apart. It's just something we had to do to move everything forward in a fucking positive way.

OneMetal.com: Are there truths in what we are hearing about the way Travis was fired? Was it amicable?

Corey: Well, we were on a tour so we had to do it over the phone. We were just like, "Hey, we've decided to go on without you,' and stuff, and he was like, "Yeah, alright whatever…" Something was going to happen; it was just whether it was coming from us or from him. Things were falling apart, and we just kind of pulled the trigger first, just to get it done, move forward and get the new guy settled in and comfortable. It's been working really great with Nick and when people see the show they will see why.

OneMetal.com: What's your opinion on the whole "American Idol"/"X-Factor" reality music thing?

Corey: Oh, man… I mean, who buys that shit? It's just like normal average people. But I've watched "American Idol", and if you watch it from the beginning you get sucked in; it's just like any other TV show. You get the whole storyline, all the different people on the show with their stories. It's just kind of like a TV show, but then you get the music. People get attached to whoever is on the show and when they put out a song, it's like (in a cracking falsetto voice) "Oh yeah, I gotta buy it, yeah yeah yeah." But a lot of the people on "American Idol", if they came out with music, they would just be like a dime a dozen, with the same old shit. But I guess being on "American Idol" gives them a platform to connect with people so that people like that person and want to buy their stuff. But there's like 15 other people that have CDs that sound exactly like it. Its just a TV show. I mean, Simon Cowell is one smart motherfucker. He knows how to make some
cash. I mean, I wouldn't mind getting in on a piece of that. But it is what it is.

Guitarist Stefan Weinerhall of the Swedish metal band FALCONERhas issued the following update:

"Still alive and kicking!

"Yet another rare update for all who wonder if we've split up, taken a year off or just forgot the [band's official] website.

"Between jobs, diapers, TV-shows, Friday beers and good ol' apathy we rehearse a song or two. Slowly the new stuff is taking shape but we have no stress, half the new album is written.

"Recording time for the forthcoming album is October.

"Previously I said that it will have a slightly new direction, or rather new approach. Hint No. 2: The Germans will probably like it more than the Americans."

"Carnival Of Disgust", the latest video from FALCONER, can be viewed below. The clip, which was shot at the medieval Vadstena castle on a windy and cold April day, "exceeds [all] expectations," according to a press release. The song comes off the band's most recent album, "Among Beggars And Thieves", which was released in August 2008 via Metal Blade Records. The CD was recorded at Andy La Rocque's (KING DIAMOND) Sonic Train Studio in Varberg, Sweden. 13 songs were mixed during the sessions, including two bonus tracks for the LP's first edition.

FALCONER in 2007 extended its deal with Metal Blade for another four albums.

Swedish rockers VAINS OF JENNA have announced the addition of singer Jesse Forte to the group's ranks.

Forte was raised in Orange County, California and comes from a musical background. He attended music school at MI, played in a slew of bands since a teenager and even admits he panhandled on the corner playing guitar for money. Jesse says, "I am a performer first. Whether it be five people or five thousand — I embrace that opportunity to sing and play music."

VAINS OF JENNA's new vocalist was born in Arkansas but moved to the West Coast at a very young age. Eventually Hollywood's music scene came calling and Jesse started killing and thrilling crowds on the Sunset Strip.

"We first saw Jesse in 2009 when his band opened for us at the Cat Club," says VAINS OF JENNA co-founder and bassist JP White. "And he blew us away."

The Swedish rockers have had lots of success during their young career in the States. So the departure of their longtime friend, Swedish comrade and vocalist Lizzy DeVine was no doubt a big blow — but the band refused to lay down and die. "It's not in my blood to stop doing what I started," says Nicki Kin, the band's main songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. "I love music, I live music, and this is what I do."

VAINS OF JENNA's brand new single with Jesse Forte on vocals, "Everybody Loves You When You're Dead", is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page.

VAINS OF JENNA will play a headlining show at the Whisky A Go Go in Hollywood, California on Saturday, April 10. A European tour will follow, with dates booked in Norway, Sweden, England, Wales and Italy.

Xu Liuliu of Global Times reports that Richmond, Virginia metallers LAMB OF GOD will play two shows at Star Live in Beijing, China on April 11 and April 13.

According to LAMB OF GOD's China tour organizer, Guitar China's Jiang Wei, the tour took three months to plan for and prepare.

"Our Taiwan counterparts gave LAMB OF GOD's Asian tour plans to us," said Jiang. "They are very happy to be making a stop in China."

LAMB OF GOD had originally planned to play shows in both Beijing and Shanghai, but the band was unable to secure a proper performing license.

"There was nothing we could do about the cancelled Shanghai show, so we added one more date in Beijing," said Jiang. "It was a tragedy that we're letting LAMB OF GOD fans in Shanghai down."

Jiang admitted that he is still wor'ried about being able to recoup his losses from organizing the band's two Beijing shows. Jiang said he has spent years organizing shows for foreign performers, but has been losing money for just as long.

"Each show will sell around 500 tickets at most," he said. "I don't dare talk about earning money in a situation like this, but I'm just making sure I can make ends meet."

"I don't regret asking LAMB OF GOD to come to China," Jiang added. "Losing money or not is not something I can decide on. [LAMB OF GOD] is really, truly great, and least they are being able to bring their great rock spirts and experiences here."

LAMB OF GOD said that although they will be playing two shows at the same venue, the setlists for the two nights will be completely different.

"Only several classics will be the same, but the rest will be completely different," said Jiang.

Germany's "doom metal kings" MIRROR OF DECEPTION will enter Soundmann Studio in Stuttgart, Germany on April 1 to begin recording their fourth album, entitled "A Smouldering Fire". A late 2010 release is expected.

MIRROR OF DECEPTION's last release was the split LP with Finnish doomsters GARDEN OF WORM which came out in 2009 via The Church Within Records.

MIRROR OF DECEPTION's third album, "Shards", was released in October 2006 via Cyclone Empire.

Cleveland metal legends SHOK PARIS will perform their classic 1984 album, "Go For The Throat", in its entirety for the very first time on Saturday, May 1 at the Beachland Ballroom in the band's hometown. Also scheduled to appear are GROUND ZERO, H.A.T.E. and DOFKA. The show starts at 8 p.m. Admission is $9.

"Go For The Throat" was the first release from both SHOK PARIS and Auburn Records in 1984. The landmark vinyl album was reissued with bonus tracks on CD by Auburn in 2004 to support SHOK PARIS' performance at the Bang Your Head!!! festival in Balingen, Germany.

"After doing the last few shows, it has come to our attention that a lot of the fans coming to the shows, old and new fans alike, were not around when we first came out in '84," says SHOK PARIS lead vocalist Vic Hix. "Back then, all we could play out was 'Go For The Throat' material because that's all we had. As time went by and we started writing for the newer albums, we stopped playing almost everything from 'Go For The Throat' except 'Burn It Down' and 'Run But Don't Hide'. Those two were a mainstay as the ending songs, forever, at all of our shows, even up to this day. It just would not feel right not doing those songs at the end of the night.

"So fast forward to today. At the past few shows we have been asked why we did not play this song or that song off 'Go For The Throat'. [So] we decided for the next show to blow the dust off of that ol' piece of vinyl and play all the songs from it.

"I think it will be a blast to do! It will give everybody a taste of the 'ol Shok Pariee,' as we like to say."

SHOK PARIS reunited in 2009 with a new lineup to perform at the Auburn Records 25th Anniversary Concert. The band still features core members and main songwriters Ken Erb on guitar and Hix on vocals.

SHOK PARIS will headline the first night of the Headbangers Open Air festival, set to take place July 29-31, 2010 in Brande-Hörnerkirchen, Germany.

The band is working on new material and plans to begin recording its fourth studio album for Auburn later this year.

SHOK PARIS is:

Vic Hix - Vocals
Ken Erb - Guitar
John Korzekwa - Guitar
Ed Stephens - Bass
Donovan Kenaga – Drums

J. Bennett of Decibel magazine recently conducted an interview with former HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST and current TRIPTYKON singer and guitarist Tom Gabriel Warrior. An excerpt from the chat follows below.

Decibel: In some of the early TRIPTYKON-related postings, one gets the sense that you harbor a certain amount of resentment towards [former CELTIC FROST bassist] Martin [Ain]. Is that the case?

Tom Gabriel Warrior: Well, I harbor a huge amount of animosity towards CELTIC FROST's final drummer [Franco Sesa]. What I feel for Martin is a huge sense of disappointment that he would forsake something so sacred to us like CELTIC FROST — something that basically represents the work of our lives and the sum of our friendship, a friendship that has existed since Martin was about 15. I'm four years older, and that friendship endured for 25 years, so that he would let that go down the drain disappoints me. But there's no animosity towards Martin on my side — just a tremendous sense of disappointment.

Decibel: So, what happened, exactly? He just didn't want to continue with the band?

Tom Gabriel Warrior: Everything connected to CELTIC FROST is very complex, and it's difficult to explain in the few lines you get in an interview. So, nothing I can say right now will do the actual situation justice, but there were several personal problems. Most of all, I could no longer tolerate the utterly egotistical megalomaniac behavior by the final drummer. All of this would have been no problem if Martin and I had stuck together. Martin himself, at the very end, said, "If you and I would have spoken with one voice, he could have never done all this." And I couldn't have said it any better. But the thing was that Martin was utterly burned out by touring, by creating albums for years, by personal misbehavior, so when I really needed him, he was nowhere to be seen. By his silence, he agreed to the demise of CELTIC FROST. That's possibly the easiest way I can explain it, but this is a process that took place over a period of years.

Decibel: On your blog, you mention that you and Martin signed an agreement in 2005 that neither of you would continue CELTIC FROST without the other. You also say that much of the music on the TRIPTYKON album was originally intended for the follow-up to "Monotheist". That being the case, to what extent is TRIPTYKON just CELTIC FROST without Martin?

Tom Gabriel Warrior: That's exactly what it is — absolutely. You have to understand, there's two levels in a band. There's the musical and artistic level, and then there's the personal level. And as far as the musical level was concerned, I was one hundred percent happy and fulfilled in CELTIC FROST. I was very happy that we reformed the band; I was extremely happy that we focused so much on making "Monotheist" an extraordinary album — that we didn't just shoot out the album for a check from the record company, but instead took five and a half years of endless songwriting and production to make sure the album really was CELTIC FROST the way we see it. We didn't let ourselves be affected by management or record-company deadlines or whatever you have in the industry. So, I don't see a single reason why I should interrupt that artistic flow. I wanted to make many more albums with CELTIC FROST, and that's essentially what I'm doing. Some of the material
for the TRIPTYKON album was written when CELTIC FROST still existed. Some of the other material was written afterwards, but it's me, and I know how I write, and I wouldn't have written any differently if I had been in CELTIC FROST. To me, this is the new CELTIC FROST album with a different rhythm section, basically.

Decibel: And none of the material was co-written with Martin?

Tom Gabriel Warrior: No. Martin to me was very important as a songwriting partner in CELTIC FROST, but as everybody knows who reads the credits, he wrote about 50 percent of the lyrics, but very little actual music. What was important to me was the chemistry and the chance to discuss every little detail in CELTIC FROST. In this way, he shaped a lot of the things in CELTIC FROST, but he was not a direct songwriter. His biggest contributions as a musical songwriter were on "Monotheist", some 24 years into CELTIC FROST's career. I've been the main songwriter, and in TRIPTYKON I suppose I will continue to be that.

Decibel: Just one more Martin question, and then I promise we'll move on…

Tom Gabriel Warrior: [Laughs] Look, I'm a fan, too. Ever since I was a child, I've been a heavy metal fan and there have been bands that were very important to me and things happened behind the scenes that left me puzzled, so I myself — as a reader of magazines — always wanted to know what happened. If a band is important to you, you're curious about these things, so I totally understand.

Decibel: How do you feel Martin's absence in TRIPTYKON, then?

Tom Gabriel Warrior: Well, I'm speaking totally honest with you here. This is one of the first interviews I've given for the new album, so I'm still in the mood to be honest. I'm probably gonna lose that willingness soon [laughs], but I can tell you that when CELTIC FROST fell apart, I was very intimidated about starting a new band. I hadn't been writing music without Martin for many, many years, and I myself was very curious how his absence would affect my songwriting. Being intimidated changed while I was working on the TRIPTYKON album, and nobody was more puzzled by that than me. But I felt liberated because in CELTIC FROST, every song I would bring into rehearsal would be dissected and rearranged and discussed over and over again and at the very end, they would arrive at what I had brought in originally. Maybe that's a constructive process in a democratic band, but for me it was extremely tiring and it really hindered my songwriting contributions. It
became a drag to bring in new material, and that's why "Monotheist" took five and a half years to complete. Writing for TRIPTYKON, I felt mentally liberated because the songs ended up being exactly the same as how I wrote them.

"Been a long time since the last update but we are currently extremely deep into the songwriting and recording of the new album which should be released during the fall 2010.

"Do we need to tell you that it sounds good, great, fantastic…? Like always, right? At the same time we are working with a lot of new people to ensure the best possibilities for a successful work for the new album. There will be more news about this soon. But there are some MAJOR changes in the world of EVERGREY, and we are confident it will all be for the better.

"At the moment we are booking a short tour for Europe in May, tour of South America in June and some dates for the USA in connection with that. Festivals on top of that and so far we have a couple we can't go official with until we get the word, so be sure to visit [our web site] to stay on top of where you can catch us soon."

Los Angeles-based black metal band THE FUNERAL PYRE has completed work on its new album, "Vultures At Dawn", for a late spring release via Prosthetic Records. The follow-up to 2008's "Wounds" was recorded by Adam Campbell at Awkward Studios, mixed by Ryan Butler (LANDMINE MARATHON, MISERY INDEX, PHOBIA) at Arcane Digital and mastered by Dave Shirk (INCANTATION, NILE, TODAY IS THE DAY) of Sonorous Mastering. Artwork for the album is being handled by Justin Barlett, known for his work with bands such as TRAP THEM, INTRONAUT and SUNN0))).

The band commented on the sound of the new record: "On this record we stepped out of our comfort zone and tried to create better songs, never focusing on what style of metal it actually is. Just writing the songs was most important to us."

No strangers to the DIY metal circuit, having multiple U.S. tours under their belt, THE FUNERAL PYRE has a run of dates next week on the West Coast; two with EARLY GRAVES and four with LIGHT THIS CITY on their farewell run. The band also just completed a batch of dates to Texas and back with LANDMINE MARATHON, which included Prosthetic's South By Southwest showcase on March 17 in Austin and a Brooklyn Vegan SXSW day party at Hoek's Death Metal Pizza.

Norwegian black metallers 1349 will release their fifth full-length album, "Demonoir", on April 26 in Europe via Indie Recordings and one day later in North America through Prosthetic Records. The CD was recorded at Studio Nyhagen, deep in the woods in Norway with Tom G. Warrior (HELLHAMMER, CELTIC FROST), who showed the greatest respect for the task and played a key role as motivator and catalyst. His technical role of the recording was that of a co-producer, but far more important was his presence and understanding of what a challenging project "Demonoir" was.

Commented 1349 vocalist Ravn: "In hindsight, it is our belief that Tom was the missing piece of the puzzle, adding that element of heritage we needed. He represented the direct link to the Creators! We also need to mention three other contributors; Ronnie LeTekrö — one of the most acclaimed guitarists on the globe, wrenched his soul inside out as he recorded one of the leads for 'Psalm 7:77'; a truly breathtaking experience. We had some excellent, wicked grand piano play carried out by Canadian pianist Tony Caputo. And then there was Thorbjørn Benjaminsen of Hornorkesteret that recorded some spine chilling themes with his stringed reindeer horns, adding a touch of natural grimness to the electric inferno."

Prosthetic Records has launched the pre-order for the North American versions of the album; a digipack CD and a limited edition (only 666 made) 12" picture-disc LP. The CD and LP can be purchased individually or together, or in a bundle with a T shirt.

Pre-order yours now at the Prosthetic webstore.

"Demonoir" track listing:

01. Tunnel of Set - I
02. Atomic Chapel
03. Tunnel II
04. When I Was Flesh
05. Tunnel III
06. Psalm 7:77
07. Tunnel IV
08. Pandemonium War Bells
09. Tunnel V
10. The Devil of the Deserts
11. Tunnel VI
12. Demonoir
13. Tunnel VII

"Atomic Chapel" is available for streaming on the band's MySpace page.

Check out the cover artwork for the U.S. edition / European limited digipack edition and the European standard edition below.

According to a press release, "Demonoir" is "without a shadow of a doubt 1349's darkest, most sinister and brutal work to date, and in this case it comes to mean that the band has gone from the utterly extreme to the genre-expanding and mindboggling. Black metal cannot, and will never be the same.

"For the band's fifth full-length release, 1349 decided to suck out the fiercest and most potent energies from every single member and surroundings, channeling it into songs that are pulsating with uncanny atmospheres, rawness and nerve-shattering intensity. The whole process of getting the material on record was like one long, exhausting black magic summoning that could not be allowed to go wrong."

1349 will embark on a North American tour in April and May as the support act for CANNIBAL CORPSE (alongside SKELETONWITCH and LECHEROUS NOCTURNE). (Note, 1349 will not appear on the last week of the tour.)

1349 rose from the ashes of ALVHEIM in 1997, and in 2003 they released their debut album, "Liberation". Since then, 1349 has added three more albums to its critically acclaimed catalog.

1349 is:

Ravn - Vocals
Archaon - Guitar
Seidemann - Bass
Frost - Drums
